East Texas, and Southern Romanticism

Yesterday I was driving in my parent's Ford, listening to an old country song, and watching as a complete stranger gave me a friendly wave, when a thought occured to me. I really do love the South, even several aspects of East Texas. This was a new revalation to me, since in the past I have refused to associate anything good with East Texas. I've always pretended to be repulsed by the ignorance of many East Texans: the rediculous racial tensions, the pervasive nominality of Texas Christianity, and the absolute denial that anything could be better than living in Texas. In light of these things its very easy to regard East Texas as a very horrible place, and I know a good number of enlightened people that would agree with me that it is.

But then there are the moments when I find myself singing Amazing Grace in a country waltz tempo in a rural church full of friendly people. I know some Northerners who think that friendly Southerners are really out to get you. This makes me laugh, because I'm afraid it's not true. The reason Southerners are nice is the same reason that thier lawns are littered with broken down cars and lawn mowers. Its the way that they were raised - to take life with a grain of salt and not take themselves too seriously.

Even beyond this there is something really beautiful about the South. It's always on the tip of my tongue but the pictures never melt into words. My brother once said that a Southerner can never name discreet aspects of the South, but he knows what it is when he sees it, and he is proud of it. I'll leave it at that.

What I've been up too:

1) Reading Great Expectations
2) Biulding a brick walkway and lanscaping for my parents
3) Getting glasses (It is the straw that broke the camel's back in regards to my nerdom)
4) Missing Sarah far more than any of the above

I just realized that I've done the one thing I promised not to do in my blog. Your darned if you do and your darned if you don't. On Saturday I am taking a 24 hour greyhound bus ride to Madison Wisconsin. I'll try to take some pictures and post them. I'll also work on posting more often.

So I've been thinking that my profile picture may be indecent or too suggestive. Anyhow, because I know that many children read my blog, I want to be sure not to corrupt his or her mind. Since we live in a democratic society I am putting it to the vote.(Children's votes will not be counted of course)

Nighthawks and Live Music

Nighthawks are small birds that are in the "will" family, being related to whipoorwills and poorwills. They have always been a mysterious bird to me. They show up unannounced in early summer and disappear before October. They come out at or after dusk on balmy nights and catch insects that swarm around softball stadium lights. They make a strange chirping noise, not unlike an insect. They have a wispy flight that makes them graceful and unpredictable. They have always reminded me of summer.

Live music does something to me. Sitting outside next to the girl I love while songs drift by me reminds me of a place I've never been or seen. Or maybe its a dream that I have forgotten. Its a feeling I know I'll never forget.

Tonight I went to a Ben Kweller concert that the university put on for free. It was fun and Ben Kweller is certainly a good entertainer.

As we sat and listened to the show, the nighthawks danced above us on a young summer breeze that meandered across fields and hills, the way it has always done.

First Blog Ever (sort of)!

This is almost my first blog, and I hope hope anyone who reads this is happy that I made it. First of all I'd like to thank Nathan for making this possible, without your encouragement I could never have made it this far. I'd also like to thank xanga, without you none of us would be here. And lastly I'd like to thank Sarah, without your love and support I would probably be a nerd.

I'm starting this blog because I am aproaching  a long and possibly lonely summer and I might need something to talk at. I think blogs are like pets for people too irresponsible to have them.

I would like to say that this blog is not intended to be a list of personal actions, it should instead be a forum for thoughts, reflections, and discoveries. At some point I might write a constitution for Melancholy Codpiece. Anyways, Nathan I'm trusting you to keep me in line on this.

The currently listening to window may or may not be a reflection of what I am listening to. I am an engineering student who likes good grades, so I have little time to listen to music. Instead it is more a representation of what I would like to be listening to.

Ring a dem bells! A child is born! I bring you good tidings of glad joy!
